Addressing the QB Situation

I hate to crap in the 5-0 punch bowl that Minnesotans are drinking out of, but there is a very serious dilemma on the horizon. While it's clear that Brett Favre still has "it" this season, a time will come soon when he will finally-once-and-for-all retire. He really will. He'll have to. He can't play forever. So just for arguments sake, let's pretend that he retires at the end of this season. Where do the Vikings go?

Tarvaris Jackson is a free agent at the end of the season. The Vikings can probably sign him for whatever they feel like spending on him. It just doesn't seem like the market for a 4th year guy who has been ok-at-times-but-never-great-but-mostly-bad will be that high.
Sage Rosenfels is signed through the 2011 season so he will be in the mix. But there is a reason the Vikings wanted Brett Favre so badly. The options are average at best.

So...Free Agency?

Here's the list of 2010 free agent quarterbacks:
Jason Campbell
Kyle Orton
Chad Pennington
Charlie Batch
Kyle Boller
David Carr
Kellen Clemens
Daunte Culpepper
Jeff Garcia
Rex Grossman
Joey Harrington
Jon Kitna
Matt Moore
Patrick Ramsey
Brett Ratliff
Troy Smith

I haven't been this underwhelmed since Indiana Jones 4 came out. The best quarterback on the list (Kyle Orton) is probably going to sign a long term deal in Denver, so he's out. Jason Campbell is probably the next best option and, thanks.

There has been a lot of talk about a trade for Donovan McNabb. I can't imagine Philly would let it happen. He's still really good and Michael Vick isn't. That ain't gonna happen. And even if it did, it would only be for another year or two.

Other reports have Brady Quinn's Cleveland area house up for sale and the Browns shopping their former first round pick. So do the Vikings make a phone call and see what it would take to get Quinn here? It's an intriguing option considering Quinn doesn't have anything around him in Cleveland but it probably won't sell any tickets. Put that one on the back burner, although I can't imagine the Wilfs want to spend any more money on the quarterback position this year than they already have.

So apparently the best bet is to draft a QB. Let's say that Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford leave college early. Clausen, Bradford, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead seem to be the top prospects. Clausen and Bradford will probably go in the top 5 so they are out. Now you are looking at drafting Tim Tebow (and probably having to trade up to do it) or Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead. Is anyone sold on any of those guys?

I'm telling you, the options for the Vikings QB situation after this season are not good and as soon as #4 hangs up his cleats for good, we will all start having the same conversations we had the last 2 off-seasons. The window for the team to win as it is built right now is probably going to be open for this year and the 2 seasons or so after that. If Favre decides he is done after this season and actually means it, the keys get turned over to Sage or a resigned Tarvaris. It's tough to get excited about that. Neither could lock down the job in training camp. Neither has shown they can be consistent.

To quote Mike Tice, "enjoooy the season." But it this is a problem that isn't going away any time soon.

  2. I'd take my chances with Rosenfels or T-Jack over anyone on that list... which still doesn't generate warm & fuzzies...
